I take a look into DTP solution to display tree - i not sure but seems they use more standard eclipse solution then ours, it is possible be better repeat his solution... important classes to start  here CommonViewer, DataSourceExplorerView, etc.
I vote for more standard solution - so code review here is necessary with possible refactoring.
