I'm resolving this now as the primary use cases have been fixed. Any further enhancements should be filed separately.

What's been fixed:
  - No more random exceptions with no explanations. While not all explanations will be 100% sufficient now, they will at least have some relevance and provide some real clue as to what's going on.
  - A build listener has been added which reports back to the console so the user can follow along too. 
  - Variables can actually be used in the .packages file and still be found when running from ant.
