I've run through jstl functions: generally speaking a half of them returns strings and anther half returns  true or false. Mostly functions are used in conditions tags and for text output. There are usually bean's properties or variables in functions. Thus it's hard to evaluate these expressions in VPE. To my mind it's easier to dasplay jstl functions as is like any other EL variable.
