Usecases:
- in the selection of templates (the if) you could use full xpath instead of the custom hasinparents() etc... 
- Less need for java code (more can be done in templates)
- xsl is a standard, so instead of a more limited custom mechanism a standard is used

So I'd not go for xsl-like, but xsl
