#1 I think we will be apply selection using style only on mac platforms for now, because it's better then nothing for now.
#2 If  we will use a one div with transparency, or 4 divs with width 1px and without transparency than it's make more difficult our selection processing, because we should take into account possibility of selection this div(div's).
For example if we select <table>, the div will be under the table and we can't be able select tr or td in this table.
