The problem with the method presented is for every file I open I have to do this, open my file, open it again, drag the sliders around etc.  For 100s of source files that one might edit in a day this is a tremendous drag on productivity.  I would also add that this requirement came from me watching a customer open the two paned editor with two monitors and ask can I put these side by side.  In other words since most monitors are landscape and people are starting to have more then one of these on a desk side by side as a possible way for development makes more sense then top and bottom.  Hopefully this makes sense.  As for as possibilities in other software, Microsoft Word supports a side by side viewing, I feel like I have seen some adobe products do this, but I can not remember which one.  Hopefully this can hit a PRD and scheduled for inclusion.
