Max, 
what do you mean under "when the VPE editor couldn't load xulrunner" ? When visual part displays nothing/errors?

According to the stacktrace this exception is thrown when VPE controller hasn't been initialized. However in this case almost all the other toolbar actions will throw similar exception.
