Jim, the error is *exactly* what happens when -Dsun.lang.ClassLoader.allowArraySyntax=true is missing from the VM arguments tab/page.

If you can show me a screenshot of TestNG launch having that in place and this error still occurs then I got a problem - until then, this is solved as "known workaround" for AS5.
