Andre Dietisheim commented on JBIDE-6376:
-----------------------------------------

yes I agree, these are the bad parts and thinking twice about it there are even more problems:

- cannot customize User Agent String (mimic Eclipse & JBDS-/JBoss Tools Versions as different browsers). I guess we could overcome that by defining custom variables though.
- not sure we could launch the browser without showing it (does it request when its hidden?)

What looks like a major benefit to me is to get rid of the error-prone manual request construction and less effort to follow Google Analytics evolutions.

Java scripting looks like a very interesting option, another one (I thought of) could be the javascript bundles that you may use in e4. I'm not sure whether this works in e3 though. Java scripting looks like the most lightweight and efficient option to me so far. If you agree I'd give it a try.

> We would like to know how many actually use jboss tools.
> We got some data from eclipse update sites but they are unreliable.
> Better if we could do a simple ping to a server to track when eclipse is started with JBoss Tools.
> Default will be on, but should be easy to disable.
> Default should not track more than what a visit to a webpage tracks.
> Suggestion is to use Google Analytics to track it.
> jgoogleanalytics could be a good basis for this. http://code.google.com/p/jgoogleanalytics/
> Other requirements:
> Should not ping more than once a day (per workspace or per eclipse instance ?, per workspace I would say)
> Should be done asynchronosuly to not have any UI delays
> Should have some way to anonymously track users so we don't skew the usage data
