Thank you for screenshots, the issue reproducable on windows also... 
This bug is a result of Hibernate Console Configuration error handling improvements which were added last time...
hibernate.cfg.xml is not created on step of Hibernate Console Configuration creation for "New hibernate.cfg.xml wizard" ...
There are 2 way to fix this error:

1) create hibernate.cfg.xml when "Next pressed" and checkbox "Create Console Configuration" checked - the problem here - we should delete the file when user cancel operation or press "Back" - this is a serious drawback of this solution;
2) do not try to build Hibernate Console Configuration in case of New Hibernate Configuration file - so this should be configurable (try to build Console Config or not). The drawback -> where will not be error messages in case of something wrong with Hibernate Console Configuration here, but the user will see the error messages when he will try to edit Console Configuration. 

Ben, what did you think, which way looks better? I can't select what is better. You point of view is a very interesting.
