this is common problem which arise in the case of incompatible jars use -> here people ask the same question https://forum.hibernate.org/viewforum.php?f=6&sid=1b0cbc24466a2b398e14e96d11fa8fdb - the solution is use compatible hibernate jars - hibernate compatibility matrix is here -> http://community.jboss.org/wiki/HibernateCompatibilityMatrix
