Couldn't this be done by simply adding an eclipse variable, i.e. ${arquillian.targetcontainer} which would resolve to some value that arquillian can use to override what is used ?

That would allow you to use all the existing junit/testng tooling for this but simply just add in an extra argument to your launch that we can resolve based on the launch context.
