I think what's causing all the confusion here is the screwed up approach we have in the current editor... with the 2 models (source and target) on the same panel.  Subconsciously we must be thinking about it as one model or something? I don't know.

Anyway... we have 2 models... we always had 2 models on each screen ... source and target:

 -  Java Binding: XML/EDI/etc (source) -> Java (target) 
 -  Temaplting: Java (source) to XML/EDI/etc (target)
