it looks like (could no test so far) the sysprop "os.name" is buggy on various jre.

"os.version" seems reliable on the other hand. Win2000 will return "5", XP returns "5.1", Vista "6" and Win7 "6.1". A complete list is here: http://lopica.sourceforge.net/os.html
