I am not sure I understand you. 
Only project examples of the archetype type have a wizard/dialog showing after clicking the Finish button in the Project example dialog.
Where would you like me to show a output directory for those project examples that aren't the archetype type?

Since output directory is a preference, we could add the preferences page link to the Project Example dialog and remove the Output directory group.
