Also to be clear, the tooling never let you "choose" your execution environment. There was never any UI to choose that. On an API level, there was a way to set the execution environment. In the event no environment was set, there was a default exec environment. You could also set a specific JRE if you wanted, and there *WAS* UI for this. But there was never any UI to select your exec environment. Just your exact JRE.
