Ok, Dart. To try the patch as it is, both Tom and I have managed to successfully apply it to the 3.2.x branch on our local machines. (We don't plan on committing it to the branch, but wanted to see the effects of the patch in an environment where they hadn't already been committed, like in the trunk if I read your earlier comments correctly.)

That said, it runs locally with the example code you provided. But I'm not seeing the UI you proposed in base_launch.jpg. What should we be looking at here?
