I noticed in the meantime that a similar effect *might* also be noticeable on Ubuntu 10.10 occasionally. The effect is not nearly as dramatic as on OS X, but now and then when I do a clean on the server runtime on Ubuntu the same thing seems to happen for a few seconds.

Here too, when I send the operation to the background it instantly finishes.

The major difference is that I do not always see it on Ubuntu and it's a case of "a few seconds at most" vs "nearly instant". So it's a little hard to say whether this is really the same effect or not (after all SSDs do choke occasionally).
