there has been no discussion or comment from upstream as of late. Unfortunately, I'm not confident this will make it into 3.3 at all, since the discussion has stopped. I'm now targeting the bug to 'later' since that's when I expect it to be done, and I will periodically poke and prod upstream to see if there's any progress.
