The problem related to the m2e classpath settings when editing *.java files is fixed in m2e 1.0. m2e still resets a classpath when changing Maven preferences, pom.xml, .project and .classpath files. The patch described in https://issues.jboss.org/browse/JBIDE-9271?focusedCommentId=12611875&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-12611875 will improve performance when changing Maven preferences and/or pom.xml, .project and .classpath files, when importing a lot of Maven projects (all the JBoss AS 7 projects, for instance)...
