Neither the zip nor the hosted repo had the index information, so I don't think the searching wouldn't have worked with either of them.  We can pretty easily add the index info to the hosted repo, it look like John did this already.  But the zip will not have the same index information.  If users need the index for the zip, they could pretty easily create it themselves.  For example, if they extract the zip to a hosted Nexus instance, the index information will be automatically generated.
