Yes, you currently can only choose a WTP project. The text in the dialog is a bit misleading, it talks of java projects.
This requirement was set back in M5 where the server adapter could only handle WTP project. Now that the server adapter supports any git-shared project this requirement could be dropped. I talked to Rob about this and he did not want to drop this requirement as long as we did not test it throughout.

Shall we adapt the text in the project selection dialog to reflect this requirement?
