A new fix has been created according to Max's suggestion:

The cheatsheets will be opened in the Cheatsheet view.
*.htm, *.html will be opened in a browser, *.txt, *.md in the Text editor and others with their associated editor. 

The following files are automatically recognized as a welcome page:

- cheatsheet.xml and .cheatsheet.xml as a cheatsheet
- readme.html, readme.txt, readme.md and README.md

Committed to the trunk. Attached are a patch and plugin.
