Reading the link you sent to me, .gitkeep is not a feature of git at all, and is simply a hack that some users came up with. Adding a .gitkeep is no different than adding a .robkeep or a .nickkeep. Git treats them all the same.
Not sure why you think .gitkeep is the "recommended" way, when it clearly is not (?)
