I'm not sure how to read your numbers - how do you separate zip installs from marketplace installs ? Market place installs counts as stable/4_1 installs does it not ?

With these numbers it would indicate marketplace is either lying or our download stats are not precise.

In case we actually have a way to separate installs done via zip and those done via zip then 518 installs is not 0 and so is 3340 not at all.

Besides that - the main reason for using/providing updatesite.zip is:

A) to allow users without network access to install. 
B) provide an archive of the version to point to.
