This was introduced with the new openshift-java-client i built for JBIDE-13522. Bill DeCoste switched the protocol version to 1.1 in https://github.com/openshift/openshift-java-client/commit/d2199da8c8ddcc22c1ed40fa8718296b9bc480d0#L8R59
In protocol version 1.1, the application type is reported as embeddable cartridge as you can see here: https://issues.jboss.org/browse/JBIDE-12321 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=838611
