With JBDS 7.0.0.Beta2 I enabled debug for p2 as:

org.eclipse.equinox.p2.core/debug=true
org.eclipse.equinox.p2.core/metadata/parsing=true

and got the list of actual metadata involved in central Software/Update initialization and installtion

Right after start switch to Software/Update tab in central and debug gives list of downloaded metadata as:
