it turns out that the above import fails because I already have a project imported which is using the very same name *jbossews-example-1.0* already. Thus the failure is expected and not a bug. The maven import is using the name that is in the maven pom, not the name of the OpenShift application. Thus 2 different applications import to the very same name in the workspace.
