Adding org.springframework.ide.eclipse.ajdt.feature to my JBDS 7.0.1 + Spring IDE 3.4 from your update site made the aspectj error go away on the spring travel quickstart.

This is weird as AJDT is supposed to be optional. I'm gonna retry Joshua's quickstarts now.
