Notes for documenting:

#devstudio

(02:20:38 PM) mmurray: user moving from 7.0.0 to 7.1.0 will need to install JBDS 7.1, right?
(02:20:40 PM) nboldt: mmurray: roger, go ahead for Q
(02:20:48 PM) mmurray: there won't be any simple update, will there?
(02:20:51 PM) nboldt: no, they can just upgrade
(02:20:57 PM) mmurray: oh, cool
(02:21:07 PM) mmurray: so just check for updates
(02:21:08 PM) nboldt: same eclipse baseline, so should be seamless
(02:21:09 PM) nboldt: yeah
(02:21:28 PM) mmurray: great - will get that documented
(02:21:49 PM) mmurray: so only when underlying eclipse changes, like going to luna do users need to do a reinstall
(02:21:53 PM) nboldt: try it: install JBDS 7.0.0.GA from update site, marketplace, or installer jar, then add this URL to Eclipse/JBDS: http://www.qa.jboss.com/binaries/RHDS/builds/staging/devstudio.product_71/all/repo/
(02:22:03 PM) nboldt: and do "help > check for updates"
(02:22:10 PM) mmurray: will give it a go
(02:22:24 PM) nboldt: yes. going from (potentially) incompatible versions requires a fresh install
(02:22:38 PM) nboldt: but Kepler R -> Kepler SR1 -> Kepler SR2 should be seamless upgrade
(02:26:49 PM) mmurray: nboldt: when you say 'add URL' - I added it under Help > Install new Software; then quit that screen and picked help > check for updates
(02:26:54 PM) mmurray: is that the best way?
(02:27:15 PM) mmurray: can you do the update straight from the help > install new software page?
(02:27:22 PM) nboldt: yep, or else Window > Prefs > "available software sites"
(02:27:25 PM) mmurray: or was there somewhere else to put the url?
(02:27:28 PM) mmurray: ok
(02:27:48 PM) nboldt: you can give the URL to Eclipse and then have it search for updates to existing installed features
(02:28:04 PM) nboldt: or you can help > install new to manually install stuff (whether an update or something new)
(02:28:09 PM) mmurray: ^ the preferences option looks the best to document for adding the url
(02:28:18 PM) mmurray: oh right
(02:28:27 PM) nboldt: only reason you need to give the URL is because the 7.1 bits are not located at https://devstudio.jboss.com/updates/7.0/ yet
(02:28:34 PM) mmurray: as always - plenty of ways to accomplish the same thing
(02:28:50 PM) nboldt: so once 7.1.0.GA is released all you need to do is "check for updates"
(02:29:02 PM) mmurray: won't they go to updates/7.1 though?
(02:29:11 PM) nboldt: of if you have that enabled automatically, it will nag you when it finds there's something new
(02:29:25 PM) nboldt: no, we would only put them in /7.1/ if they're incompatible
(02:29:32 PM) mmurray: right, okay

> The Migration Guide contains info about moving between JBDS 6 to JBDS 7.
> Will need to add info to the guide on how to update from 7.0.0 to 7.0.x - is a fresh install required?
> Not necessary to do this for 7.0.0, but should do this in time for 7.0.1 release.
