Verified in JBDS 8.0.0.Beta2a B121 using a custom stacks.yaml to download https://repository.apache.org/content/groups/public/org/apache/karaf/apache-karaf/2.2.11/apache-karaf-2.2.11.tar.gz . Obviously the runtime will not be added in JBDS, but at least I could verify that the tgz could be extracted properly and the directory was pre-filled for me as the runtime root dir.

So if a .tar.gz file is /home/rob/tmp/some.tar.gz,   and it expands to /home/rob/tmp/my-app-version-2.3.0/   with all files under that, it should correctly identify that new folder as the root of the unzipped archive.
