Rich,

Could you try the following:

- disable NSS libraries in java.security
- try to open some *xhtml file in the JBoss Tools VPE editor

In this case JVM will use XULRunner's NSS library.
However, I think the issue is related to the OS's NSS libraries. Otherwise, we would always have the same issue when working with the VPE editor.
