Turns out that the sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection call with the url (locally for me - http://localhost:8080/jbide-17664/rest/get) is NOT throwing an exception that I can catch. That's bizarre. The runtime is throwing an exception on the execution, but calling the URL via the API is not.
