Generic project import != import Maven project, i.e. m2e's project configuration phase is not invoked. For instance, Eclipse would see the Maven Dependencies library is configured to be deployed, but each individual classpath entry would not be fine-tuned by m2e-wtp. So, provided dependencies (servlet, ejb, cdi apis ...) would be deployed.

I believe handling heterogeneous project import, if possible, requires non-trivial changes to the project examples plugin.
