The zero-length-file exception is still reported, but it could be tracked separately, since it is not the root cause.

I just found out why Eclipse was crashing. Debugging with strace revealed a previously known issue involving [the Bluejeans plugin|https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=433606] :

Uninstalling the bluejeans plugin resolves the issue (although in an unsatisfactory way). I had also uninstalled the google talk plugin prior to this, to ensure that I would not run into [this related issue|https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=404776].
