This is expected. It would be available from the Nexus index, m2e used to download on startup. This feature has been disabled by default, so you get a very limited list of archetypes by default..

As a workaround, I suggest you do Preferences > Maven > Archetypes > Add Remote Catalog... (You can also access this page from the Configure... button , next to the catalogs combo, in the New Maven Project wizard)
