I don't think so, IIRC the mechanism checks diirectly the referenced site, independently of whether it's available in the IDE.
I believe this might be a small bug. Can you attach a screenshot of the connector?

I don't know, I thought this implementation would be more user friendly and you are the first one to complain.
Anyway, I believe the change you're asking for is too big to get into 4.2.0 safely.
