So just to conclude what happened here:

the nightly discovery site was definitely not added by my hand since i did not know about it but I remembered while going over it that I had a proxy network issue earlier today.

My *guess* is that somehow caused it to picked up a cached copy or get a ide.properties that have a nightly update site pointer when I ran the first update after removing all the updatesites.

all except staging.

so on first run - it would pick up nightly for browsersim.
second run it would remember it was a CR2 and get right ide properties
so on second run it would have both nightly and development discovery site and get the new arquillian content and force update despite I had disabled earlyaccess.
since the composite sites have earlyaccess in it so the code we have in earlyaccess to *remove* the earlyaccess site has zero effect.

So yes, I f**ked up by not double checking that nightly was not coming from my local stored ide.properties and the behaviro afterwards was inconsistent because the discovery site (or rather central) still contained earlyaccess content composited in.
So three bugs influenced this:
a) project examples tested for aerogear thym instead of eclipse thym
b) I was running with something that grabbed cached nightly central url
c) the updatesites we are pointing to includes earlyaccess disabling/invalidating the logic w have in earlyaccess.
(there is also the issue about mixing naming conventions etc. but yes that is not a bug causing a bug mechanically but mentally since it caused confusing on what was actually being pointed to)

So when JBIDE-18558 and JBIDE-18590 is fixed a and c above is solved and I will remember to always clear the full updatesite list *completely* to ensure less surprises ;)
