The software installation wizard shows a "i"-icon for required fields:

I'm not sure if using this is more descriptive than the "*" which is imho quite widely used in the web for required inputs.
I agree though that the "*" was wrong for the "existing project" though since it wasnt a required input (in the above screenshot). Nevertheless with the redesign of the application wizard this field doesnt exist any more.
