I agree it can happen because Luna (and probably Kepler, too) lazily initializes editors. See JBIDE-17899 that happens for a similar reason. The Eclipse editor utility doesn't register such partially opened editors and can try to open the same editor twice.
However, the listeners introduced by this patch should close invalid editors.
Could you check if you use the latest trunk or cr1 version?
Is there a log?
