The details pannel is implemented in ApplicationTemplateDetailViews. The switching of detail panel occurrs on changes in the detailViewModel (a databinding observable value). The ApplicationTemplateDetailViews should switch to the empty view when there's no selection and detailViewModel gets "null" (that's how I would expect things to work. The switching of detail panes in done in AbstractStackedDetailViews#getViewFor(detailViewModel, IDetailView... detailViews)
