I'll consider it rather critical we add tests for these to be able to do changes like this and feel somewhat certain about it not breaking features.

I think the tests can be kept very simple but at least just getting started on having some test setup in place for doing this so we can add to it as we fix bugs add features can verify we haven't broke something plus document what servers work with what the better we are of.
