I gave some more tries and here's what I've found so far:
 - it only happens when JBDS is not started in fullscreen
 - getting past the welcome screen means a safe state, past this point resizing just works
 - having central enabled/disabled seems to have no effect
 -> the app only crashes when it is not started in fullscreen and the welcome screen is enabled
