So this behavior is not abnormal. It is not possible to use Hibernate versions 3.x and 4.0 in combination with JPA 2.1. I will resolve this as 'Rejected' but I have created JBIDE-19790 to make sure we implement functionality to only offer compatible Hibernate runtime versions with the chosen JPA version.
