Regarding an OOTB workaround for Wayland users, we have a workaround for Unity users: 

https://github.com/jbdevstudio/jbdevstudio-product/blob/master/installer/src/config/resources/devstudio-unity

We could do a similar thing to set *GDK_BACKEND=x11* prior to launching devstudio executable. Not sure we can set environment variables in devstudio.ini - here's an 11yo bug asking for that sort of support: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=102239 and this workaround: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2426317/eclipse-ini-variables
