I also haven't succeeded to reproduce the issue on GTK 3.8.8 (compiled from source).
Since the patch for https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=431425 probably won't be applied, I have created a patch for the foundation.ui plugin that works the same as the eclipse patch.
