I have nothing substantial to add, just few details what originally happened to me:

That was the case, I installed just Spring IDE, not STS

And that was true as well. Now with "strict" I see NoClassDefFoundErrors, too. There are subsequent NPEs in org.eclipse.ui.navigator.CommonNavigator in various situations later but I guess reporting them doesn't make sense since the installation is seriously broken.
