I'm not able to replicate this.  After tracing through with [~adietish], we think it's the behavior of the mac osx file chooser. 

[~mmalina] Can you check this on linux / mac?  I don't think windows has symlink, does it?  If it does, try it there too.  As far as I can tell (me and andre set a breakpoint) it seems custom to the mac file chooser but I'd like another set of eyes on it.
