Here's something I just tried. I created a symlink ~/tmp/Downloads that points to ~/Downloads. If I go to ~/tmp in Finder and then double-click the Downloads symlink, now I'm in ~/Downloads. So I think this is different compared to linux where I would still be in ~/tmp/Downloads.
