I can confirm that when I remove: git pull --rebase --ff-only upstream master from narayana.sh then the problem does not exist. Therefore there must be a commit that occured between the last time we pushed some changes from jboss-as into our 5_BRANCH and the current tip of jboss-as master.

I would suggest working out what upstream change broke the AS for us.
